Abstract

The number of agriculture business households in 2013 was 958,724 households, food crops sub-sector 397,937 households, horticulture 156,580 households, plantation 733,157 households, livestock 200,836 households, fisheries 59,404 households, and forestry 47,229 households.

The number of smallholder households in South Sumatra in 2013 was 110,932 households or 11.68 percent of agricultural land-use households, decreased by 107,159 households or down 49.13 percent compared to 2003.

The number of farmers working in the agricultural sector is 1.20 million people, the most in the plantation subsector is 0.88 million people and the smallest in the fishing subsector is fishing activities of 0.03 million people.

South Sumatra's main farmers amounted to 31.23 percent in the age group of 35-44 years.

The average area of land held per agricultural business household is 19,499.74 ha, an increase of 89.36 percent compared to 2003 which was only 10,297.91 ha.

The number of cows and buffaloes as of May 1, 2013 was 242,592 cows, consisting of 215,953 beef cattle, 324 dairy cows and 26,315 buffaloes.
